Snowflakes

Self-assigned editorial piece; this article appeared in the Jan. 3 2011 edition of The New Yorker. Snowflakes aren’t actually all unique, they all start out very much alike but their environment shapes them as they travel down through the atmosphere. Insert analogy about people.

I saw Billie Martineau in the latest issue of BUST magazine, and that night had dreams about those vintage Yves Saint Laurent trousers. Pencil, inkwash, digital.

Argh, this may be the last colored illo I can do before my deadline. Still, I’m pretty happy with how this came out, even if I’m embarrassed at how different it looks from the others. At least it’s a self-imposed deadline, and the thing I’m submitting it to isn’t really about my art skills, it’s just kind of a bonus. Once I’ve submitted it, I can go back and really give this project the love it deserves. Does it look too different from the previous one? Also, don’t nobody complain that I can’t draw dudes because this one looks like a lady—because he totally is one, dontcha know?
Also, big props to Pieter Bruegel for being such a badass painter so many years ago. Seriously I love that guy.

Gahhh. This is the sort of piece you do and wish you had time to go back and re-do the others in this style. Maybe after all this madness is over I can revisit them? But let me tell you, at 11″x14″, this took all damn day to draw. Coloring it was really fun, I got to try a lot of things I’ve been playing with individually and see how they work in one piece, and the results make me want to do more in this style. This overwrought, tortured combination of Edward Burne-Jones and Barry-Windsor-Smith…style.
Don’t no ADs at the NYT op-ed call me up and ask for something like this in three hours, ok? But I think it would be super fun to come up with a stylistic shorthand using these techniques to create something fresh. (unless I’m the only one who thinks this is cool, and the rest of the illustration community has seen this played out so much they’re sick of it? Oh, it’s self-doubt o’clock…)
